What is Botox?

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable medication called neuromodulators or neurotoxins. It works by interrupting the signals from your brain telling specific muscles to contract causing less muscle movement and fewer “expressive wrinkles” - the lines which form when you frown, squint, raise your eyebrows, and smile.

You will notice results in as little as 3 days with full results in 14 days with results lasting up to 4 months. Results may vary in each individual and we encourage you to follow up at 2 weeks to evaluate your results.

In addition, Botox can used to treat pain management as it blocks nerve signals that control muscle activity for relaxation and pain relief.

Neurotoxin is approved for patients who are 18 years or older.

Botox cosmetic injections smooth fine lines and wrinkles in several areas of your face including:

  • Eyebrows
  • Forehead
  • Nose
  • Eyes (crow's feet)

Health insurance policies vary. It is always a good idea to check with your insurance provider. Most insurers cover treatment for migraines, urinary incontinence or other medical conditions but typically do not cover injections for cosmetic purposes.
Cosmetically, neurotoxins and dermal fillers offer similar results. While both help reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, neurotoxins are made from botulinum toxin while derma fillers are made from other natural or synthetic materials, including collagen, hyaluronic acid or calcium hdroxylapatitie. The main difference is neurotoxin injections temporarily paralyze muscles to reduce wrinkles and dermal fillers add volume and help retain moisture. As part of your consultation we will discuss options to treat your specific needs.
